A beirdo isn't just a man, a beirdo is a man with the biggest, most glorious beard you have ever seen. Beirdos often compete in competitions to prove their beard's superiority over their competitors. The competitions award men according to the style of facial hair they choose to fashion for the event. There are three main categories (moustaches, partial beards, and full beards), with true beirdos often competing in the freestyle category that allows for the creative freedom to style their facial hair as they wish. Organized facial hair competitions have been going on in Europe since the early 1970s, but the first modern event took place in 1990, hosted by the First Höfener Beard Club in Germany. In 1995 local European clubs made the contest a global competition, agreeing to hold it every other year in a new location.
